Vieux Diouf
Biography
Vieux Diouf
(2014)
Vieux Diouf is a Seereer-Siin artist originally from Fatick (Senegal). He started singing since childhood and was a regular contributor to his school plays and choir. He was a pupil of the Mahécor Primary School of Fatick (Senegal), where he attended his early education.
Despite singing since childhood, he took a long brake from singing and resumed in 1999 at the age of 25, but became more serious about his career choice, and started working as a professional artist in 2014. Diouf is a member and lead vocalist of the Dioudiouf Mgog a Yiif band. The long gap in his musical career was mainly due to lack of opportunities or support, which many musicians constantly face.
Diouf was greatly inspired by Mohammed Faye, the great Seereer vocalist renowned for his tenor–falsetto vocal range and vocal acrobatics. Like his idol, Diouf is an accomplished artists with a tenor–falsetto vocal range, and has great vocal acrobatic skills. Along with his vocal skills, Diouf is also a composer with a huge talent for playing a multitude of musical instruments including the piano, guitar, and drum. One of his most well known track is Say Say.
Diouf is a versatile artist who plays a mixed style of music including reggae, zouk, mbalax, Seereer folk (including njom), and salsa.
Diouf’s most recent album as of 2022 is titled Fatick (released in 2014), and is named after his hometown of the same name. The theme of the album is a call for the locals to work together for the economic and social development of their city and region.
During the Coronavirus pandemic, the Seereer artistic community played a major role by utilising their craft in order to sensitize the public to follow government and scientific advice and regulations thereby minimising the spread of the virus. In that regard, Diouf released his track Corona in 2021. The video was uploaded on his official YouTube channel on 27 September 2021.
Diouf’s latest work as of December 2022 is on Seereer Heritage's single Ceereer ne ino mbogun released on 15 December 2022 which is the flagship track to the upcoming album Ino mbogu Seereer ne (to be released in 2023). On this single and album, Diouf appears as one of the primary artists following Seereer Heritage's artist auditions held in Kaolack on 27 August 2022. On this single, Diouf’s vocal acrobatics can be heard on the first phase of the track, just before the bridge.
